Dr Rebecca Johnson: The Aussie Scientist Taking Conservation to the Next Level
Rebecca isn’t your typical lab rat. She knew what she wanted early on. At 11, after reading Sadako and the Thousand Paper Cranes, she told her parents she was going to cure cancer. That hunger for answers stuck with her.
Fast-forward a few decades, and Rebecca’s running the show as Director at the Australian Museum

Research Institute. She’s leading from the front with the Koala Genome Consortium, a team of over 50 scientists who cracked the code on the koala’s DNA. That’s not just a win for science nerds. It’s a game-changer for koala conservation and the future of one of our country’s most iconic animals.
“It is so important for people to understand how science can improve things like the conservation of iconic species,” Rebecca says.
Rebecca isn’t just about koalas. She’s on a mission to put museum science on the map. Most people don’t realize that museums and herbariums are packed with top-tier research that impacts everything from climate change to saving endangered species. She wants Aussies to wake up to the fact that these places are full of untapped knowledge about our land, our history, and our culture.
“So much amazing work goes on in museums and herbariums,” she says. “We need more people to see the value of the knowledge held in these places about our environment, our history, and our culture.”
Rebecca is also upfront about the hurdles especially for young women in science. She’s not here to sugarcoat it. Self-doubt happens. Her advice? Face it, own it, and back yourself.
“Self-doubt is completely normal. Ride with it, accept it, and back yourself regardless.”
Real leadership isn’t just about making headlines. It’s about opening doors for others and calling out the stuff nobody else wants to talk about. Rebecca Johnson is doing just that. She’s showing Australia that you don’t need to wear a suit or sit in a boardroom to make a difference. Sometimes you just need a lab coat, some grit, and the guts to push for change.
Why Rebecca Johnson matters:
She’s shaking up conservation science
She’s fighting to make museum research mainstream
She’s pushing for more women in science and calling out the mental battles along the way
She’s not just protecting koalas
she’s building a legacy
Rebecca Johnson isn’t just a name in the science world. She’s the kind of entrepreneur who actually moves the needle for Australia.
